Lexus HS 250h Exclusively for Non-Europeans

Lexus HS 250h hybrid won't be sold in Europe. At least this is what some officials close to the matter hinted, pointing that Lexus, together with parent company Toyota, has some other plans for the Old Continent when it comes to hybrid powertrains. According to a report by autocar.co.uk, Lexus aims to debut in Europe a hybrid version of the IS model while Toyota will introduce a greener flavor of the popular Avensis.

In this context, launching the HS 250h in Europe, which would become a direct competitor for a hybrid IS - a model that is a bit larger compared to the HS - would not make sense in such a difficult market environment, the aforementioned source quoted a statement by Lexus.

“Selling the HS 250h here would be an emphatic no because of Toyota’s plans to put a hybrid in every range by 2020. The car would be premium d-segment and a direct competitor to the Avensis and the IS, which already meet premium needs.”

Lexus yesterday announced pricing for the 2010 HS 250h, with the standard model offered with a price tag of $34,200. The Premium edition is sold for $36,970. Thanks to the hybrid powertrain, the car achieves 35 mpg (6.72l/100 km)in city and 34 mpg on the highway (6.9l/100 km).

"The creation of a dedicated luxury hybrid vehicle speaks volumes about Lexus’ commitment to our customers and hybrid technology," said Mark Templin, Lexus group vice president and general manager. "Forward-thinking, well-informed entry luxury consumers are seeking a social statement and technology with a clear benefit in their next car. HS 250h delivers this with its unique package and modern luxury that fits their advanced lifestyle."
