Publishing a teaser video of the XC40 on Volvo Hungary’s Facebook page was a mistake for the Swedish automaker. For the fans, the stroke of luck comes in the form of plenty of revealing shots of the compact crossover. After deleting the uncut video detailing the XC40, Volvo’s international Facebook page re-uploaded an edited, less revealing teaser clip of the newcomer.
The Internet is a magical place, however, and stills from the original teaser leave little to the imagination on expecting enthusiasts. What’s more, the wait won’t be long now considering the Gothenburg-based manufacturer has confirmed the world premiere will take place next Thursday on September 21.

If you’ve already spotted the R-Design badging in several pics featured in the gallery, that’s because this fellow here is the XC40 R-Design. Akin to the 40.1 Concept that previews the production model, the front- and all-wheel-drive crossover doesn’t look half bad with the body painted in white and everything from the side mirror caps upward finished in black. In fact, it shares many similarities with the new XC60, including the unmistakably Volvo proportions.

The teaser further reveals an interior design that mirrors that of the XC60, with a tablet-like touchscreen infotainment system dominating the dashboard. Wireless charging for your Qi-enabled smartphone, an automatic transmission’s gear lever with a different design from that of Volvo’s bigger utility vehicles, and a badge reading T5 Twin Engine are on the menu too.

T5 Twin Engine is the range-topping powertrain choice for the 2018 Volvo XC40, which will arrive in the United States for the 2019 model year at the latest. The plug-in hybrid backbone comprises of a 1.5-liter turbo three-cylinder engine, an electric motor, and a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic.

The first Volvo to ride on the Compact Modular Architecture, the XC40 in PHEV attire comes with front-wheel-drive. Total system output is still a mystery at this point, but the Swedish automaker previously confirmed the 1.5-liter Drive-E is good for 180 horsepower in its most potent tune.

After the XC40, Volvo will most likely expand its lineup with the XC20.
