It’s highly likely 2018 will be the last model year for the current-generation S60 and V60, especially when you consider the all-new XC60 is bestowed with SPA underpinnings. As a way to celebrate its long run, the most extreme variant of the old 60 Series receives extra downforce and a lot of carbon fiber.
For 2018, the S60 Polestar and V60 Polestar boast 30 percent more downforce than before thanks to aerodynamic enhancements made from carbon fiber. The material is used for the rear spoiler extension, side skirts, and front splitter, with Volvo promising better handling in addition to the go-faster look. And wouldn’t you know, these elements were developed by Polestar Cyan Racing.
Limited to 1,500 vehicles, each carbon fiber package-equipped S60 Polestar and V60 Polestar come with a serialized tread plate that flaunts exclusivity. Also on the visual front, these bad boys from Sweden are augmented by high-gloss black diamond cut wheels, carbon fiber mirror caps, and a new exterior color: Bursting Blue Metallic. On the inside, you’ll find updated seat upholstery, Polestar embroidering, as well as trademark blue contrast stitching.
All in all, Volvo tells that “more than 250 components have been changed” compared to the standard S60 Polestar and V60 Polestar, which is an immense feat considering this run is limited to 1,500 units. One of the highlight changes comes in the form of the Ohlins adjustable shock absorber system. The Brembo six-piston brakes with 371-mm discs are also noteworthy.
As ever, the two high-performance models are propelled by a 367-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder engine with class-leading fuel consumption and emissions. When driven like an old lady, you can expect figures as low as 7.8 liters per 100 kilometers and 179 grams of CO2 per kilometer. But then again, what sort of old lady would get a Volvo that can hit 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.7 seconds, on to a top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph)?
