The 24 Hours of Le Mans race will have more to offer starting from next year, as Motor Racing Legends today announced the return of the Le Mans Legend historic support race to next year’s event.
This means that the stage for the famous endurance race will be opened by the iconic racers that will come to show that they can steal the show. To be more precise, spectators will be able to enjoy a 45-minute race (for one or two drivers), which is scheduled to take place on the full 8.5 mile (13.7 km) Le Mans circuit on the morning of Saturday, June 11th, 2011.
The classics that will be put through their paces on the Le Mans track just a few hours before the modern endurance gladiators enter the arena will belong to the 1949 - 1965 production years. In other words, be prepared to meet heroes like the Aston Martin DB2, Austin Healey, Jaguar C-Type, Jaguar D-Type, front and mid-engine Ferraris, Morgans and MGBs. However, the organizers have chosen to ban the Ford GT from the grid “to keep the racing close and competitive”.
“The 1950s and early ’60s is, for many people, perhaps the most emotionally charged period of motor racing history – a genuine golden era, when the cars were not only beautiful, but also highly distinctive and instantly recognizable. For spectators (and there are some 230,000 at the Le Mans weekend), this makes the racing even more enthralling, as you don’t need a wealth of historical knowledge to get excited by the sight of a Ferrari 250LM or Jaguar D-type flat-out on a race track,” said Duncan Wiltshire of Motor Racing Legends.
