Off-roading is an acquired taste, and as any other activity people grow into, it needs nurturing from a young age. So if you are a carmaker, make sure your cars are among the first to be tested, and you might just have planted a seed that could grow into a purchase later on.
Driving academies and courses are a dime a dozen, but very few are specialized in teaching students off-roading skills. Especially those ran by makers of iconic cars.
On the last day of September, Land Rover announced the launch of a new Teen Drive Experience program meant for teens 14 years or older. The program will be available starting this fall at three Land Rover locations in Vermont, California and North Carolina.
To be eligible for the program, one needs nothing, really, not even a driver’s license. That’s because for the duration of the sessions, which take place in a specially designed and closed area, each teen will be accompanied by an instructor and a parent or guardian.
There are, however, physical limitations: each participant must be at least 14 years of age and 4’8” tall.
During the course (priced at $275), teens will mostly learn defensive driving skills and sound driving habits, but they will also get the chance to tackle low-level obstacles as a means to build up interest in off-roading.
“We are very excited to extend our Land Rover driving experience to teen drivers,” said in a statement Kim McCullough, Vice President of Marketing, Jaguar Land Rover North America.
“Providing expert instruction, in a controlled environment, to young drivers will help them develop good driving habits both on- and off-road. This is also a fun and engaging way to introduce them to the world of Land Rover.”
As a way to get people talking about the program, Land Rover had 2019 FIS World Cup big air Snowboard Champion Chris Corning be among the first to sit behind the wheel of one of its cars.
