After a wait that seamed to go on forever, the Italian supercar maker has finally revealed the details of its brand new V12 engine, together with the the “Lamborghini ISR” automated manual gearbox.

This is the first brand new V12 made by Lamborghini since 1964, when the outgoing model went into production. Since then, the old engine saw action in legendary models such as the Miura, Countach, Diablo and most recently Murcielago. Its most powerful incarnation was Murcielago’s swan song, the LP 670-4 SuperVeloce, that produced 661 hp (493 kW) at 8000 rpm and 660 Nm (490 lb-ft) of torque at 6500 rpm.

The new 6.5-liter monster even tops those figures, producing 700 hp (525 kW) and 690 Nm (509 lb-ft) of torque. Lamborghini also saw fit to put the engine on a diet as it now only weighs 235 kilograms (518 lbs).

“This new power unit is not only the crowning glory of our product range, it is also part of our enormous investment in the future of the Lamborghini brand,”
says Stephan Winkelmann, President and CEO of Automobili Lamborghini.

Lamborghini set the bar really high with their new powertrain, mating the engine to a “Lamborghini ISR”, automated manual gearbox that provides quicker shifting times, excellent gear change feel and the everyday usability that most supercars lack. The transmission weighs only 79 kilograms and has a compact design, both of which are key for the supercar’s performance. The Independent Shifting Rod (ISR) system has two shifting rods, which means that while one is shifting out of gear, the other already has a new one selected.

“With this new V12, we are heralding a technological leap that encompasses all areas of the company and our future model lineup. With a unique package of innovations, Lamborghini will redefine the future of the super sports car. This 700 hp engine, together with an all-new concept gearbox, will be the strong heart of the Murcielago successor next year,” Winkelmann added.
