Kubica to Sign Renault F1 Extension

Polish driver Robert Kubica will almost certainly stay at Renault for the 2011 Formula One season, now that his options for the future have been reduced dramatically with Felipe Massa signing a 2-year extension to his current Ferrari deal. Constantly linked with a seat with Ferrari through the last few months, the 25-year old looks set to continue his adventure with the Enstone based team.

I'm feeling really comfortable at Renault. Here, the team and I can build ourselves up, and that is a great satisfaction,” said Kubica, who signed a one-year deal with Eric Boullier’s team at the end of last season.

In recent weeks, both Red Bull Racing and Ferrari have moved to securing their lineups for the 2011 season, with McLaren Mercedes and Mercedes GP already having long-term deals with their drivers. Under the circumstances, contract discussions should commence immediately within the Renault team, and we’re guessing it will be a short talk between Kubica’s manager and the Renault F1 management.

I was looking, after the difficult season I had last year, not only for a quick car but for a team where I feel comfortable and welcome. And I got it so I am happy with the decision I made,” further added Kubica, hinting that he doesn’t plan to talk to any rival teams for a new contract, as he’s happy with what he has achieved at Renault.

We can now sit down and discuss properly with Robert his future with us,” said Boullier, hinting that the big teams’ already securing their 2011 lineups is a good thing for his own team.

Robert Kubica has so far scored 67 points this season – same as Ferrari’s Felipe Massa – and is 7th in the drivers’ classification, with 2 podiums and 6 point-scoring performances in 7 races.
