The fact that KTM is the largest European motorcycle manufacturer was no secret, as the Austrians have led the Bavaria-based BMW during 2012 and 2013… and it looks like things are still on the same trend this year. KTM announces that Q1 2014 worldwide sales went up by a whopping 26.8%, with both revenues and earnings before tax on the rise, as well.
KTM sold 32,994 motorcycles worldwide, a noticeable difference from the 28,719 bikes and maxi scooters BMW moved in the same three months of the year. At the same time, BMW’s growth was only 16.1 percent over the first quarter of 2012.

The Austrian manufacturer received a lot of help from its Indian partner Bajaj, which also moved 2,748 small-displacement units in India, mostly the 200 and 390 versions of the Duke model. KTM’s opening towards emerging markets also brought them a good deal with Chinese manufacturer CFMoto, which will also produce and sell the KTM 200 Duke and 390 Duke in China.

Production in China reportedly kicked off in March, but we have no figures on how much KTM plans to sell in this market. Still, with small-displacement bikes being extremely popular in China, we can expect that the “orange business” will grow even more.

Quarterly revenue increased by more than 20%, while the EBIT (earnings before interest and tax) went up a fantastic 254 percent. With the new 1290 Super Duke R and the 1190 Adventure and Adventure R reaching worldwide markets soon, the 390 Duke making it to more countries and the new small-displacement sport bikes also coming, KTM looks like it will give BMW a run for its money this year, too.
