Kovalainen Crashes T127 at Jerez

After a first successful test at Jerez on Wednesday, during which reserve driver Fairuz Fauzy completed more than 300 kilometers at the wheel of the T127, Lotus' enthusiastic mood took a negative turn today, when their race driver Heikki Kovalainen lost control of the car and crashed it into one of the barriers of the circuit.

It all happened in turn 3 of the circuit, where the Finnish driver couldn't avoid a slide on the wet track and his car made contact with the tire barriers. Kova was doing a 7-lap stint at the time. After returning his car to the garage, the former McLaren driver hit the Internet and admitted his mistake via his personal twitter page.

Had a crash and damaged front wing, session over for us. S..t! My mistake, tomorrow we go again...” said Kova.

After a thorough examination of the car, the mechanics concluded that the front wing and nose of the car were severely damaged from the impact. And, since the team lacked spare parts for the Jerez test on Thursday, the entire day of action came to an early end for the green and yellow single-seater.

Knocked off the front wing. Spare on its way but will not be here until 2am in the morning so no more running today,” wrote the team's technical director Mike Gascoyne on his twitter page, while also expressing his regret over not being able to see the T127 on a drier track on Thursday.

Conditions drying up so a shame not to get any dry running today,” added Gascoyne.

Kovalainen is scheduled to do a second test on the T127 this week, tomorrow, before handling the car – hopefully in functional shape – to his more experienced teammate Jarno Trulli.
