Kia Cee'd Hybrid in the Works

Although the hybrid sector is currently dominated by two over-discussed models, Honda Insight and Toyota Prius, South Korean manufacturer Kia is apparently holding an ace up its sleeve. We're talking about a hybrid version of the popular Cee'd hatchback which might go on sale in the United Kingdom in 2011, according to a report by What Car? The source says Kia's main goal is to compete with Honda Insight which is already running high in Japan, where it became the best-selling passenger car in April.

Getting back to the green Cee'd, the hybrid will rely on 1.6-liter gasoline engine that would boast around 125 horsepower. Obviously, an electric engine will be available as well, with an estimated output of 20 horsepower and mated to a continuously variable transmission (CVT).

The hybrid powerplant would obviously increase the overall output of the Cee'd, partially thanks to the addition of the electric unit, with CO2 emissions lowered as well. Unfortunately, official figures are not available at this time but we're still expecting for some official specs from the South Korean manufacturer.

We can't say for sure whether the new Cee'd will rely on lithium-ion batteries but such a pack is most likely to join the range because it could provide both advanced autonomy and fast recharging times. Still, one thing is sure: the model will rely on the same technologies seen on other hybrids, such as regenerative energy while braking and deceleration and start-stop systems.

It's a little curious to see Kia planning to launch the hybrid in the United Kingdom as both Toyota and Honda are pushing their efforts towards this particular region. However, there's still a lot to wait until Kia rolls out some official details so keep an eye on our news section.
