After combining a Toyota RAV4, Audi Q5 and BMW X3 and getting the ‘A380’, Chinese carmaker Jonway has done it again, with another compact SUV. This time, the ‘victim’ is the ubiquitous Suzuki Jimny, a firm favourite of off-road enthusiasts on a budget, as well as city-types who want a small car, yet one which is high-riding.
The similarity between the two is not very obvious at first, but when you take a closer look at proportions, the A-, B- and C-pillars, you notice that the shape is identical (the Chinese car is a bit longer, though, and it gets an extra set of Mazda RX-8-style doors). Furthermore, considering the fact that the Jonway A280 will cost about half as much as the Japanese car, while also offering more space and a bigger engine (1.6-liter vs 1.3-liter), it will undoubtedly be a high-seller.
We say that if they were to start exporting it, and if it proved to be reliable and solid, it could start getting some ‘followers’, and while the Suzuki may have gotten a head start, with cars like these, the Japanese manufacturer needs to stay at the top of their game, in order to maintain the Jimny at least at the level it is now.
