Way to early, we know, to make any calculation on who will break what record in this year's Sprint, but that doesn't appear to be stopping Hendrick Motorsports driver Jimmie Johnson.
After at the end of 2009 Johnson became the holder of a new record in NASCAR, with 4 consecutive Sprint Cup Series championships to his name, he is back at it in 2010 and would appear there's no stopping him.
Last weekend, following an incredible lucky pit stop timing which brought him the win, Johnson proved his worth again in Vegas, beating runner-up Kevin Harvick by a solid 1.874 seconds. This win marks the 49th career victory for Johnson and places him on the 12th place on the Cup Series wins list.
Johnson passed teammate Jeff Gordon with 17 laps to go. The latter started the race from the outside pole position and immediately led the first 52 laps, always keeping in the top three afterwards.
"He was really, really good," Johnson said about Gordon. "I guess he got too tight there at the end. Man, I did all I could for the three runs before that, and I had nothing for him."
"I could get close, then I couldn't get the pass pulled off. … We had a great race car all day long. I think he really showed the strength of Hendrick cars when Jeff and I checked out from everyone."
The LVMS race saw Gordon ending fourth, with Mark Martin coming in fourth.
