This just in from Fiat-Chrysler Automobiles NV: the US-based FCA US LLC launched a global safety recall that covers a heck of a lot of sport utility vehicles. The fault that stands at the center of this op has something to do with the sensibility of the software that governs the side-curtain and seat-mounted side airbags. Bummer!
Before moving forwards with this vehicle safety-related story, it’s utmost necessary to highlight that the peeps from FCA US are unaware of any injuries or accidents related to the fault on hand. The automotive company reports that this recall op follows an investigation by Fiat-Chryslers’ engineers after a small number of inadvertent deployments happened, events that involved drivers who executed extreme maneuvers.

Well, what did you expect?

FCA US LLC further informs that these maneuvers dramatically changed the vehicles’ angle of operation, relative to the ground. Therefore, the airbag systems automatically activated after the sensors detected a potential rollover situation.

Surprising? Not even slightly...

It’s a little uncanny for the automaker to take heat ‘cause some people didn’t drive their cars as normally intended, thus activating the airbags, but we guess that FCA US doesn’t want to risk anything after the so-called Year of the Recalls.

228,181 SUVs are affected in total by this apparent glitch, coming in the form of the 2014 and 2015 model year Jeep Cherokee mid-size SUV.

Estimated volumes by market are the following: 168,092 in the United States, 19,557 in Canada, 4,133 in Mexico and some 36,399 units outside the NAFTA region. FCA US promised to notify customers ASAP, with the updated software immediately available.

Boiled down to the bare minimum, dealership service departments all over the globe will have to recalibrate the software’s threshold for deployment, with the Jeep Cherokee vehicles remaining 100 percent compliant with all applicable safety regulations.

US owners of affected vehicles are urged to call 1-800-853-1403 for any info related to the recall.
