Jaguar Recalling 6,475 XJs

When driving luxury British sedan with soft suspension listening to Bach on the sound system, nothing could ruin your day right? Especially not something as small and insignificant as, say... rain. Well, apparently it can when your windshield wipers aren’t working right.

Jaguar has issued a recall affecting cars manufactured between July 28th, 2009 and November 3rd, 2010. All the cars, numbering 6,475 units, are US-spec models.

According to a press release by the American National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the front wiper arms weren't sufficiently torqued during assembly. The safety agency said on its website that during operation, the nuts that secure the wipers could fail, thus resulting in a loss of synchronization that could lead to a clash of the wiper arms.

The wipers might also detach from the car, leaving the driver blind in the middle of the pouring rain. This little oversight could potentially prove deadly to drivers. Thus, the concerned Jaguar has issued a recall that is set to begin on December 13th, 2010.

Dealers will check if the wipers arms have been fitted correctly and the securing nuts will be tightened. As is the case with most recalls, the fix will be carried out free of charge.

Once this little issue will be fixed, the XJ can go back to being the superb luxury-mobile it is. The model was a leap forward in design when it made its debut. It certainly grabs attention for being the radical departure that it is for the company, even if it inherited more than its fare share of flaws by trying to be like the rest of the luxury cars made by German manufacturers. Nothing beats this car for presence and style, not even its own faulty windshield wipers.
