With the premium German manufacturers already on their way to making millions of cars among themselves, only in China, Infiniti, a brand which recently opened its headquarters in Hong Kong, wants a piece of the action too.
Infiniti are planning on building two models at a new, €250- ($315-) million plant which is planned to come online by 2014 and manufacture two models, though no information about which models they may be is available. Jenny Gu, a manager with industry consultancy LMC Automotive, said "It's a necessary step if Infiniti wants a bigger share of the Chinese market," and then went on to add that "local production would provide the volume it needs to catch up with the German brands and help to offset a rising yen", a trend which makes cars imported from Japan more expensive.
Nissan officials are aiming for Infiniti to sell 500,000 cars around the world, by 2016. However, with 19,000 units sold in China in the fiscal year which ended in March, they are a very long way off the 300,000 cars sold by Audi, the luxury market leader, and the 230,000 BMWs and MINIs sold. Infiniti are not letting up, and having moved their headquarters to Hong Kong, is a clear sign of their intentions on the Chinese market.
However, if Infiniti is to reach its ambitious 2016 goal, they will have to expand their operation further, with rumors of US factories and European factories circulating around. On the subject of Europe, they plan on grabbing 10% of the European luxury car market by 2016, a dream impossible to achieve without local factories to supply (almost) tax-free motors for local markets.
