Ducati factory rider Andrea Iannone will start the next Grand Prix race from the last position on the grid. At the upcoming Motul TT Assen in the Netherlands, the Italian rider will occupy the last position on the grid regardless of his result in the qualifying sessions.
The penalty comes along two extra points to his rider permit and was handed by Race Direction following the incident that also took out Yamaha rider Jorge Lorenzo in the race at Barcelona, Spain, last Sunday.

Jorge Lorenzo and Andrea Iannone were fighting for the fifth position in the Catalan GP when the Italian made a braking error on Lap 17 and collided with the rear wheel of the Spaniard. As a result, both riders were forced to abandon the race and with Lorenzo so angry that he would not even listen to Iannone as they were leaving the track.

Thankfully, nobody was injured, even though Lorenzo was limping as he was heading for the scooter that took him back to the pits. The 2015 World Champion was distressed, adding that he was left speechless when Iannone approached him and, instead of admitting he had made an error, he inquired if Lorenzo had experienced engine troubles in that turn.

Jorge Lorenzo: “First of all, as I said yesterday, everything is secondary after what happened on Friday. About the race, it’s unbelievable that Iannone made this mistake again and when he did, instead of saying “sorry” he asked me if I had an engine failure or something strange happening in this corner. I thought it was his fault, but he had this reaction and didn’t say sorry.

There is always one rider that doesn’t understand the risks and that his actions can seriously injure the other riders and if Race Direction don’t give him a hard penalisation, like they did with me in 2005, these kinds of riders don’t understand that they have to change their mentality. That's why I think starting the race from last position is not enough, because in five to seven laps he will be positioned at the front again due to his pace
.”

Lorenzo not earning any points in Barcelona caused him to lose the leading position in the championship, which is now occupied by Marc Marquez, with a 10-point lead. Making things worse, Rossi, who won the Catalan GP, is now only 12 points down from his Yamaha teammate, and once more in strong contention for the 2016 MotoGP world title.

Iannone thus counts no less than four DNF race in the first seven that already took place this year and two big mistakes that lead to other riders crashing out of the race.

We remind you that Iannone also took out his teammate Andrea Dovizioso one turn before the finish of the race in Argentina, while the two were running in the second and third positions. Dovizioso had a dramatic end of the race, as he picked up his motorcycle and pushed it to cross the finish line in the 13th position.

Asked about the incident, Valentino Rossi declared that he felt that Iannone should have taken the outer line in that turn instead of opting for the inside one.
