Last year, at the BMW M Festival, the crowd was in for a big surprise. The guys from Munich decided to unveil the LCI M5 at the event and the crowd went silent. It wasn’t that they weren’t excited, it’s just that they didn’t really see big changes.
That’s because, from the outside, they were rather... discreet. So discreet that you’d have to really squint to see exactly what they were. Long story short, only the headlights, taillights and the front kidney grille were changed on the new M5.

Of course, the biggest evolution happened under the skin and is hidden from the eye but for some people, looks are all that matter. Therefore, seeing as the changes were so minor, more than a small group of people must’ve thought that they could refresh their older M5s for a decent amount of money.

And they’d be right. One M5Post member did it to his car and the process was less expensive or complicated than what he thought at first. Apparently, the LCI headlights and taillights fit perfectly on older models and so does the new kidney grille.

Therefore, all you have to do is replace them and you’re set. There’s a trick though. The new units need to be installed by a coding specialist to make them work with the older platform on your car. The change implies that you change the control units for the lights and the central gateway module. If you know what you’re doing, it should be pretty easy. Otherwise you should really go see a specialist.

The end result looks the part, for sure. Dressed in a rather rare color, Speed Yellow, this M5 would fool us any day for an LCI model.
