When we first heard that Chris Evans is to take the Top Gear sovereignty from Clarkson, Hammond and May, we were just a little bit shocked. When we heard that a girl will co-present, that’s when it got really interesting. But how did Chris get the job to the detriment of the as-we-know-it format Top Gear?
For starters, leave Captain America alone. This Chris is not the superhero type of Evans. The 49-year old ginger man is probably the best suited bloke to take Top Gear into a new direction, now that the three amigos are no longer onboard. From 1983 to the present day, Chris Evans did everything from DJ-ing to producing television and radio shows. Everything!
So how did he sign a three-year deal to lead the all-new Top Gear lineup? Was it his dominance over British entertainment or his outstanding collection of old school Ferrari cars? None. It all started with a text from the head of entertainment for the BBC, reading: “Would you be interested at all in having a Top Gear conversation?” Remember that Chris Evans was adamant he won’t be presenting BBC Top Gear?
Turns out he changed his mind out of necessity of saving the Top Gear empire. The man on the other side of the line told Chris that Richard and James refused to carry on presenting Top Gear, the refusal happening 24 hours before that SMS. Before the BBC lit Twitter on fire Tuesday by announcing that Chris Evans will be hosting Top Gear from now on, Evans did the right thing by informing the three amigos about the job.
Jeremy gave Evans the best of luck while the Hamster told Evans that he was the right man for the job. Wait, we forgot ol’ Captain Slow, didn’t we? “Best of luck to @achrisevans and the future of Top Gear (b. 1977). That's a ballsy call, frankly, and to be admired,” tweeted James May. Speaking of May and Evans in the same context, remember when James took a spin in Chris’ 1961 Ferrari 250 GT California Spyder SWB?
