Honda to Sell Plug-In Hybrid Car in 2013

Honda is currently developing a plug-in hybrid vehicle and an all-electric car, with both scheduled to enter the market in three years, as the Nikkei business daily reports via Reuters.

The developments are part of Honda’s recent eco vehicle strategy, which will see the company prepare a strong offer in this segment of the market. As part of the plan, Honda is also considering building hybrids in the United States.

The Japanese automotive producer is working on a plug-in hybrid, aiming to offer a fuel economy of 60 km on a single liter of petrol, allowing the vehicle to surpass its competitors in terms of efficiency.

The automaker’s upcoming electric vehicle will make its debut on the U.S. market. Honda is also considering building the Insight and two other hybrid cars in the country.

According to the report, the company has set itself the target to offer a total of five hybrid vehicles by 2013.

The new information comes after yesterday reports showed that Honda will drop plans to build a minivehicle factory in Japan, in order to focus on building hybrids. In addition to that, Honda has also decided to ditch its plan of developing a clean diesel engine family, with the move also serving the aforementioned purpose. However, the Japanese automaker has not offered any official statement on its future eco vehicle development plan yet.

We’ve decided to experience Honda’s hybrids ourselves, so we took the Insight for a test-drive. You can read the review here.
