Honda will have a big stand at this year’s Geneva Motor Show, but the star of the exhibit will be the new Civic Hatchback prototype.
The 2016 Geneva Motor Show marks the global premiere of the prototype of the upcoming Civic hatchback. Honda officials have confirmed the European launch of the next-generation compact car for early 2017.
The new Civic will be a global model, and it will be manufactured at the HUM plant in the UK. The Japanese corporation will invest €270 million (approx. $293 million) in new production technologies for the new car. This comes to underline the importance of the Civic in the company’s range.
Compared to the current model, the upcoming Civic hatchback will be 30 mm wider, 20 mm lower, and 130 mm longer.
The designers fitted the Japanese hatch with bigger and wider tires for a sporty look, while the longer wheelbase and short overhangs ensure improved interior space.
The next generation compact hatchback from Honda is equipped with LED lights and taillights, but these might not be standard for the production version. However, we hope that Honda will repeat the experience of the eighth-generation Civic and build a production model with a design close to that of the concept. Since this exhibit is showcased as a prototype, it is even closer to production than a traditional concept.
Honda has reinterpreted its family face with the new Civic prototype, and the car features an aggressive interpretation of the company’s design language. Thanks to the changes, the upcoming Civic could be a model with a striking look, a worthy successor to the eighth-generation of the hatchback, praised for its alien-like appearance.
Concerning powertrains, the upcoming Civic has already been confirmed with three engine options. Gasoline units will be 1.0-liter and 1.5-liter VTEC Turbo engines, while the diesel option will be a revised 1.6-litre i-DTEC unit.
The two new VTEC Turbo units will eventually be offered in the rest of the Honda range. The Japanese carmaker’s latest units are all-new and promise an optimum balance of high power and torque, so Honda has got a few tricks up its sleeve.
Along with the new Civic, Honda will also showcase their Clarity Fuel Cell vehicle in its European debut at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show. The pair will be joined by a Jazz “Keenlight” Concept, a “Black Edition” of the CR-V, two limited editions of the current Civic, as well as the new Honda Africa Twin motorcycle. The Honda stand at Geneva also features the RA272 race car, used by the Honda Formula 1 team in the 1965 season.
