As you may have noticed already, the brand new Honda Jazz, known as the Fit in Japan, had "Hybrid" written all over it. This model is no ordinary hybrid though, as Honda has just claimed it's the most efficient one currently on sale in Japan if you exclude PHEVs.
The system is brand new, developed under the Earth Dreams initiative, and is called the SPORT HYBRID Intelligent Dual Clutch Drive and it's the top-of-the-line engine for the new supermini.

The new Jazz or Fit Hybrid uses a our-cylinder, 1.5-liter Atkinson-cycle engine working together with a high-output electric motor and lithium-ion battery. The engine itself uses the Atkinson cycle and also has twin cams, in comparison to the outgoing model's single cam. Total output is rated at 135 hp at 6000 rpm and 125 lb-ft or torque at 5000 rpm.

Honda has benchmarked the VW Polo so the car uses not the usual CVT, but a sporty seven-speed twin-clutch gearbox.

We've saved the best till last: the fuel efficiency. In the Japanese J08 cycle, the new Fit Hybrid will deliver 36.4 km/l (85.6 mpg US / 102.8 mpg UK or 2.7 liters / 100 km). It can also run at speeds of up to 40 km/h (24 mph).
