Honda Announces Record Annual Sales in Malaysia

Honda Malaysia released its annual sales figures today. The company sold a total of 44,486 units last year and announced an even higher sales target of 48,000 vehicles for 2011. The result fall in line with similar figures from Perodua, BMW and Volkswagen, who have all announced record-breaking sales.

The majority (94 percent - 41,691 units) of cars retailed in Malaysia were assembled locally. Of the total, almost half of the figure was contributed by the City, with 19,946 units sold in 2010. The Civic came second with 20 percent of sales, followed by the Accord with 16.5 percent. Honda’s compact SUV, the CR-V, was fourth with 12.5 percent, as demand increased by 60 percent compared to 2009.

Fully-imported models accounted for 6 percent (2795 units) of the total sales. The Stream MPV leads the pack with 1062 units, followed by the newcomer Freed with 851 units. The Jazz, Civic Type R, Civic Hybrid, Accord V6 and Odyssey made up the rest.

Since it was launched at the Kuala Lumpur International Motor Show last month, the Insight hybrid has received more than 1,300 bookings, with deliveries to follow next month. The Insight is a five-door hybrid model and its hybrid powertrain combines a 88 hp 1.3-liter i-VTEC engine with a new generation Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) system that’s 19% smaller and 28% lighter. The system consists of a 14 hp DC brushless electric motor coupled with a Nickel Metal Hydride (Ni-MH) battery pack.

The CR-Z sports hybrid could also arrive this year and should benefit from the full duty exemption that is valid until the end of 2011. Also expected to arrive this year is the 2011 facelifted Accord that should also be locally-assembled in Malaysia.
