Although this unfortunate events looks like what people usually do when they play Grand Theft Auto, it is as real as it can be. It happened in Australia this week and after an almost 200 km (124 miles) pursuit, the police managed to catch the two aggressors.
It all started in Caboolture, north of Brisbane, this Thursday morning when the two felons were pulled over in an allegedly stolen car. They somehow fled, hitting an officer’s leg with their car.
The wild chase started and the two men managed to ditch the first stolen car in favor of a 4WD vehicle occupied by a woman and her young child. The armed hijackers demanded the woman take her child and get out of the vehicle before they left.
After a while, they are believed to have ditched the second car after realizing it was low on fuel. The Queensland Police helicopter managed to capture part of the chase when the two also get a third car and run away.
The insane pursuit ended in Tweed Heads after about four hours when the police deployed spike strips on the road to stop the car. One of the aggressors, a 32-year-old man got out of the car and shot a number of bullets at a passing car and a police officer.
The gun was knocked out of the man’s hand thanks to a car that struck him and the officers were able to arrest him. The other occupant is said to have also been arrested with no incident.
The two have been charged with discharging a firearm to avoid arresting, shooting with intent of murder as well as carjacking. They were both refused bail in court and are waiting for trial.
