Heidfeld Pushes for 2011 Seat in F1

Nick Heidfeld did not forget about Formula One, and it's likely that Formula One has not forgot about the 33-year old German either. Although he is currently a test and reserve driver for Mercedes GP – he is yet to drive the W01 ever since he set foot in the Brackley headquarters though – Heidfeld doesn't see his future linked with the German manufacturer.

Talking about his prospects of returning to a full-time seat in the Great Circus next year, Heidfeld admitted that the chances of doing that with his current team are low, close to nonexistent. For the time being, Michael Schumacher and Nico Rosberg are both part of a 3-year agreement with the German marque, and Heidfeld doesn't quite fit the equation for the future.

In the near future it will not be possible to be a race driver (with Mercedes) so I am having to look elsewhere,” said Heidfeld on Austrian 'Servus TV'.

After having started no less than 167 grands prix in Formula One, Heidfeld is obviously having a hard time getting used to test driving AMG models for Mercedes. And not because it's not a fun job, but because watching the current F1 roster, he can't help but feel awkward seeing his former rivals race while he sits on the sidelines.

The problem is when I see them (his former F1 rivals) driving and not me. But I am quite clear with my motivation and I know that the prospects for the future are quite good.”

Constantly linked with a place alongside his former BMW teammate Robert Kubica at Renault, Heidfeld admitted being in talks with several F1 teams out there, while still a decent way to go until sealing a deal.

We are in talks with almost all the teams that have a cockpit for next year open. I was a bit surprised this year how early the top seats were confirmed so now we're having to look at what is still available,” admitted Heidfeld.
