Heidfeld Feels Strange as an F1 Reserve

Nick Heidfeld admitted that it's quite strange for him not to be involved in the day-to-day action of Formula One weekend in and weekend out in the 2010 season. The German racer, who previously used to drive for BMW Sauber F1 Team in the series until last year, has 167 starts under his belt and has signed a reserve driver deal with Mercedes GP for the current season.

Although recently appointed the new chairman of the Grand Prix Drivers Association (GPDA), Heidfeld revealed his regrets over not being able to secure an F1 drive for the 2010 season. And the thing he misses the most is the preparation for the qualifying session each Saturday.

It feels strange, especially when it's just before qualifying, I'm struggling with it. Before, it (qualifying) was always a moment where you had the adrenaline rush and then off you went. I really miss it,” said German national newspaper FAZ.

The 32-year old driver was in top spot to secure a racing seat with Mercedes GP last autumn, until Michael Schumacher was confirmed for the upcoming 3 seasons at the Brackley based team. Consequently, as he did not want to miss out on F1 completely, the former Sauber driver committed to a one-year reserve deal with the Stuttgart-based marque.

However, Heidfeld remains optimistic of an F1 return next season, when some of the drivers deals signed this year will run out.

I am convinced that I will get a place in a (race) car again, although of course I am worried and would prefer to be there now,” added Heidfeld.
