Audi is not precisely the biggest star of the automotive industry's red carpet – unlike BMW or Toyota, although they shine brightly for vastly different reasons.
The Ingolstadt-based automaker is subtle and sometimes dull – but not when it comes to its classic Sportback models, the five-door liftbacks that look greater than the sum of their parts, even in black. There's no need to take our word for granted, as we are about to show you.
BMW, meanwhile, loves to get everyone outraged at the slightest hint of a new model – but still caters to classic car lovers with models like the Z4 roadster. And it even has a sibling, the fifth-generation Toyota GR Supra, which heavily relies on the German sibling for many of its bits and pieces. Plus, they share the same assembly home, Magna Steyr's plant, in Graz, Austria.
But are we talking about a Sportback from Audi, a roadster from BMW, and a proper two-door sports car from Toyota? Sam, the host of the Sam CarLegion channel on YouTube, has prepared a drag-and-roll race skirmish with abundant German DNA – somewhere in Canada.
It's the usual location – private and out of sight for regular traffic, a former airfield strip turned access point for a wind and corn farm. It is also an unprepped quarter-mile dragstrip where fans of his channel bring some of their most beloved rides to test them one against the other.
On this occasion, there was a little something extra added as topping on top of the BMW Z4 versus Audi S5 Sportback versus Toyota GR Supra drag and roll race encounter. As noted by Sam, all three of them usually feature comparable power levels – but now they're a bit far off the beaten path with tuning and modification changes. More precisely, the GR Supra has about 450 horsepower, the S5 Sportback rocks AWD and around 500 hp, while the unassuming Z4 is actually a 669-hp monster!
As always, Sam starts with either the roll or drag races – this time, it was the former because we suspected that BMW's heavily tuned Z4 would destroy the competition from a dig. No worries, it did the same from a roll, and then we settled down to check out the two drag races and see how far it arrived first. Well, the difference wasn't as big as we expected, but the soundtrack from all three of them was cool, nonetheless.
By the way, if you like BMWs, maybe you'll also be interested in carwow's latest race set between the RWD BMW M2 and the AWD M240i. And if that doesn't suffice, head over to Demonolgy to check out what is happening with a salvaged 2009 Dodge Charger that was rebuilt into a proper menace for the upcoming MotorTrend Roadkill Nights!
