Harley-Davidson Holiday Promotions Launched

Harley-Davidson began producing the WLA, as US Army-spec motorcycle, in small numbers in 1940, as part of a general military expansion. Based on the WL civilian model, the WLA was used for police and escort work, courier duties, and some scouting, as well as limited use to transport radio and radio suppression equipment.

"Now through late December, Harley-Davidson customers who make a qualifying purchase will receive a unique shadow box collectible gift that tells the story of the 1942 WLA military motorcycle and the significance of Harley-Davidson motorcycles in the lives and war experiences of Americans," a company statement reads.

Featuring original artwork reproduced from archive materials found in the Harley-Davidson Museum, each piece is packaged in a gift box that includes a complimentary Harley-Davidson Museum ticket.

The $75 value gift is free with a purchase of $300 or more on Harley-Davidson MotorClothes merchandise, Genuine Motor Parts & Accessories, Screamin’ Eagle Performance Parts or Official Licensed Products during the promotion, which runs through December 24, 2010.

The engine of the WLA was a medium-compression version of the side-valve design. The bike also featured springer front suspension, while the rear wheel had no suspension at all. Heavy-duty luggage rack (for radios), ammo box, leather Thompson submachine gun scabbard, skid plate, leg protectors, and windshield could be fitted.

Most surfaces were generally painted olive drab or black and chrome- or nickel-plated parts were usually blued or parkerized or painted white. Also, in order to reduce nighttime visibility, WLAs were fitted with a second set of blackout head and tail lights.
