The lead current Sprint Cup champion Jimmie Johnson has in the Chase has begun to shrink after runner-up Denny Hamlin won the Tums Fast Relief 500 race at Martinsville this Sunday. The difference between the two is now only six points, with four races left in the season.
The race, far from being one of the most exciting of the season, was filled with the usual NASCAR incidents, accidents and tough words. Hamlin battled Mark Martin for the win through the fifteen yellow flags.
Martin managed to place his car right behind the winner's despite the fact that at one point he was one lap down. He was followed across the finish line by Kevin Harvick and Kyle Busch, while the four-time Sprint champion Jimmie Johnson finished the race fifth.
"I love you, Mike. Great job of adjusting the car," Hamlin shouted at his crew chief, Mike Ford, after the race. "Best it's been all day. Awesome job. Pit crew, you did it right there. You got me out. Thank you, guys."
“We did not have a race-winning car all day, until the very end,” Hamlin told ESPN. “Mike and those guys just adjusted and adjusted, and the pit crew—they got me from sixth to third on that last restart and that was the key.”
“I just waited. I was hoping the 31 [Burton] and 29 [Harvick] would use their stuff up racing each other and I’d just be sitting there, trying to be patient with those rear tires and saving it until the end. It was a great run by this FedEx team.”
With the season nearing its end, the 2010 Chase proves to be the closest one to date after six races.
