The Gillette Fusion ProGlide 500 Sprint race at the Pocono Raceway proved to be quite a handful for those who made the starting grid. Following a stormy Sunday which seemed to preview the hurricane which would be unleashed at the end of the race, Joe Gibbs Racing driver Denny Hamlin managed to clinch his fourth win of the season.
Just like in the Samsung Mobile 500 race in Texas, after a nine-car pileup on the Long Pond straightaway caused a freeze in the running order, Hamin had a clean run for the win.
The mess started in the final lap, when Kasey Kahne and A.J. Allmendinger were fighting for the same spot. Kahne's Fusion tried to overtake Allmendinger by veering hard and low on the inside. Allmendinger, trying to cut him off, sent Kahne onto the wet grass and then back onto the track, sideways. The pack behind Kahne had no way to avoid him.
Kahne's Fusion first got hit by Mark Martin. It was the start of a pile up in which were involved Greg Biffle, Jeff Gordon, Marcos Ambrose, Ryan Newman, Elliott Sadler and Martin Truex. None of the drivers, including the hard hit Kahne, were hurt following the incident.
The wreck behind Hamlin caused NASCAR to freeze the running order on the final lap of a green-white-checkered-flag finish.
Hamlin was seconded across the finish line by Kyle Busch. Tony Stewart, Kevin Harvick and Jimmie Johnson completed the top five.
