Hamilton Satisfied for "Blowing Alonso Away" in 2007

The 2010 F1 season hasn’t even started, and former world champion Lewis Hamilton already threw the first punch in his quest for his second F1 title. Seen by many as the main favorite to win the world title in 2010, the McLaren driver admitted to the world the satisfaction he had when beating former teammate Fernando Alonso in his very rookie year in the series.

Back in 2007, the Brit was coming to F1 as the new kid on the block and had no plans to play second fiddle to Alonso. In the end, he lost the chance to become world champion dramatically, despite holding a 17-point lead over Kimi Raikkonen with 2 races to go. However, “blowing Alonso away” was the thing that made that season an unforgettable one, argued Ham.

“I definitely didn't blame myself for the year that I missed out (on the title. It was my first season in Formula 1, alongside a World Champion - a double World Champion - and I blew him away. I beat him,” said Hamilton during an interview with McLaren team sponsor Johnnie Walker, as reported by planetf1.com.

No-one has ever come into their first year and been at the front, let alone beat a World Champion, beat the mentality and the strength that he would have had and his experience in Formula 1 already up to that point. I'm very proud of the whole experience of leading the World Championship for most of the year, and it's sickening, for sure, to think we lost it in the last couple of races.

"There's no answer I can possibly come up with except for fate. I was leading and needed a couple of points in the last two races. I barely got one. The worst two races of the whole year. In one I went off, the second one the car stopped and it never stopped on me before. It was a growing experienced and made me who I am today," added the British driver.

Since then, Hamilton has become world champion in 2008, while Alonso spent two struggling years at Renault. In 2010 however, as the British driver admitted himself a few weeks ago, all the best drivers will compete in the best cars, as Alonso also moved to Ferrari to create a dynasty of his own at Maranello. So let the show begin…
