GTA 6 is reportedly slated for an early 2025 release date, but unfortunately, new reports suggest it could end up launching in late 2025 or, even worse, it could cross the 2026 threshold.
As reported by Bloomberg's Jason Schreier in late February, Rockstar Games sent out an email to all employees to return to the office five days a week starting in April. Because GTA 6 is in its final stages of development, it's an "all hands on deck" type of situation. Security is another major reason, especially after September 2022, when a teenager breached Rockstar's servers in one of the largest hacks in video game history.

Now, according to the most recent reports, it seems there's another reason why all work-from-home employees have been recalled full-time to the office. Sources told Kotaku that GTA 6's production might be falling further behind than Rockstar would have wanted, and the studio seems to think that having everybody at the office might speed up the process and keep the early 2025 release window open. If not, a late 2025 date is becoming more and more real as time marches on.

However, the news is even more dire than this, with Kotaku also mentioning that production is so far behind schedule, that a new 2026 release window has started making the rounds inside the company. Thankfully, Rockstar Games is still aiming for a Spring 2025 release, so we'll have to keep our fingers crossed until then. Or until the second trailer hits, hopefully sometime in 2024 to tide us over.

With over 182 million views on YouTube, the first Grand Theft Auto VI official video is now the second most-viewed video game trailer to make the rounds. It dethroned Minecraft's trailer from December 2011 with 168 million, and it's only behind Subway Surfers with 361.5 million views, published in September 2012.

This shows how much of a social and cultural phenomenon Grand Theft Auto VI really is. Its importance as an interactive storytelling medium should not be underestimated. Some modern-day philosophers have said its social permeation power is as high as "Over 9000!!!"

Regardless of when it comes out, GTA 6 will obliterate anything in its path and set new industry records not just in the video game market. It will create shockwaves throughout the entire entertainment industry. GTA V is approaching 200 million copies sold, currently sitting as the third most-sold PC and console video game of all time.

It's behind Minecraft with 300+ million units sold and Tetris with over 520 million. And I'm not too sure how well Tetris fits in this category, because of all its billion variations and whatnot. That being said, the fact remains that the GTA brand is unlike anything else that has ever existed in the entertainment business.
