Gordon Murray's T.25 to Be Made with HyperWorks

When the words Gordon Murray come out of somebody's mouth, all ears tune in to hear what is the latest gimmick pulled by the innovative British designer. Add to that the word HyperWorks (as in the same suite of programs used to create sports cars by Peugeot, for instance), and the same ears will get even more excited.

Murray's T.25 city car is getting ready for production, but before it can do that, it has to be, of course, further refined. To do this, the designer selected the aforementioned solution, provided by Altair Engineering, as the company believes it is “the most integrated range of computer aided engineering applications.”

HyperWorks comprises several applications, meant to create and test a car from the grounds up. The HyperMesh pre-processor was used to build the car's CAE model. This was then tested with the help of the RADIOSS solver, with the results visualized in HyperView.

In the future, Gordon Murray will use the OptiStruct optimization tool to fine tune the primary structures, while RADIOSS will analyze the torsion and bending stiffness, frontal offset loading and normal mode characteristics of the vehicle.

"HyperWorks has proved to be invaluable to our engineers' everyday life at Gordon Murray Design and has assisted our business in continuing to develop innovative vehicles," said Gordon Murray.

A lot of effort was put into the project, resulting in a very small vehicle, in development for the past three years or so. If we ever live to see it, it will come with the promise of a car created for “strength, performance, weight, cost, safety, usability, tooling, quality, energy efficiency, recyclable and ease of assembly.”
