The Android 11 upgrade was released last fall, and it’s now available for plenty of devices, including the Google Pixel and Samsung’s high-end models.
Unfortunately, shortly after Android 11 landed on the first devices, users discovered the first struggles with Android Auto, and one of them affected the way music plays in the car.

More specifically, in some cases, the audio is no longer sent to the car’s speakers but to the phone, despite Android Auto actually up and running on the head unit.

The whole thing worked correctly before the Android 11 upgrade, and what’s more, disconnecting Android Auto and using only Bluetooth brings things back to normal. In other words, there’s something wrong with Android Auto on Android 11, and users don’t know exactly how to fix it.

After updating my phone to Android 11, media no longer plays on the car speakers. It does play on the phone's speakers. I confirmed that the Bluetooth connection is established and that the phone is plugged into the head unit via USB cable. Prior to Android 11 update on my phone, the audio played through the car speakers,” one user explained on Google’s forums.

The Mountain View-based search giant finally responded in the linked thread a few days ago, asking users to provide additional information to help the Android Auto team determine the cause of the problem.

It would be great if you could send us a bug report from your phone to diagnose the root cause of the issue. We'll send an email with the instructions on how to capture a bug report. Please reply directly to the email with your information,” a member of the Android Auto team said.

At the time of writing, however, no workaround is known to exist, as the generic fixes users turned to haven’t made any difference. Of course, there’s no ETA as to when a fix could finally land.
