It is finally happening! Volkswagen is taking its Cupra brand to the United States, and it is set to happen before the end of the decade. Which are the models that will make it to America?
Cupra is saying "Buenos dias, America!" which is Spanish for "Good morning, America!" The brand is finally getting ready for its debut in the United States. The Volkswagen Group carmaker with athletic DNA has been waiting for the right moment. And it seems that it is inching closer. Cupra will play the part of the sporty models of the group, a segment where Volkswagen lacked a representative.

The US-bound lineup will comprise the electric Formentor and a yet-unnamed larger model, specifically designed and built in North America at one of the Volkswagen Group's factories, because that is what America wants at the end of the day. Building the model on American territory will give the brand a chance to qualify for the EV tax credit.

The information was confirmed by the brand’s CEO, Wayne Griffiths, during an annual media conference that took place in Barcelona, Spain. Copra will launch in selected states on the east and west coasts and the Sun Belt states, Griffiths explains. The models will be offered through a new distribution strategy, the Cupra CEO said, without offering any details about it.

They may either sell their vehicles exclusively online or count on already-established dealership networks to sell their cars. Going hybrid and using both sales models might also be something that the Cupra executives are probably considering.

Before that happens, Cupra is keeping busy in Europe, where it will launch the electric Tavascan, the Spanish sibling of the Volkswagen ID.5. It will be the automaker's second EV and will sell alongside the Cupra Born in the European markets. The Cupra was unveiled back in 2021.

The Terramar crossover is also on its way, with a lineup that will include mild- and plug-in hybrid versions. The facelifted Formentor and Leon are also part of the plan for the near future.

Cupra will come up with the production version of the UrbanRebel concept car, which will roll out as the Raval in 2025. However, none of the models planned for Europe will set wheels on American soil.

Cupra turned into a standalone EV-focused brand back in 2018, rolling out cars with more aggressive styling and sportier DNA than its former parent company, SEAT. However, Cupra stayed away from one of the world's largest car markets, waiting to grow up enough to match the American demands.

“When we talk ‘global,’ when we say ‘bigger,’ we mean the United States of America,” said Griffiths.

The company has been flirting with the idea of crossing the Atlantic since the very beginning.
