1973 was a difficult year for the automotive business, and GTO fans perhaps know it better. The fantastic GTO was no longer a hit, with sales dropping substantially. Only 4,806 units saw daylight this year, and God knows how many are alive today.
A 1973 GTO in perfect shape landed online recently with a clear mission: to find a new home where it can calmly sleep in a heated garage.

The car has already received a restoration, so everything is in tip-top shape. It doesn't make sense to discuss its condition, considering the restoration brought everything back to brand-new shape, so let me highlight what sets this GTO apart from the rest of the classic cars you'll come across this week.

Of the approximately 4,800 GTOs that rolled off the assembly lines in 1973, most came with the standard L78 400 V8 engine rated at 230 horsepower. The L75 was the engine that everybody loved, but few ordered. It was a 455 big-block unit with a 250-horsepower rating. The official stats show that only 544 GTOs left the factory with the 455 V8 under the hood, all fitted with a Turbo Hydra-Matic three-speed automatic transmission.

The GTO in these photos comes with this rare 455, and considering the car has already received a complete restoration, it starts and runs like a new V8.

Everything on this GTO shows the car is a true collectible, though finding someone willing to purchase a 1973 model might be hard. However, a GTO is still a GTO, and we all know how desirable they were, so fingers crossed for one wealthy collector to be more interested more in the car's legacy than in what the 1973 release brought new to the table.

The only big change the GTO received during the restoration concerns the interior, as the new owners changed its white cabin to red. It looks good nonetheless, but if you're interested in an all-original GTO, you must know this before committing to a purchase.

The GOT sells with the original owner's manual, the PHS documentation, the Pontiac invoice from the Charlotte, NC dealer where it was sold, and everything in working shape.

It's hard to tell the right price for a 1973 GTO, especially because this wasn't the best year for Pontiac's superstar. As I said, someone might appreciate the GTO's legacy more than what the 1973 model year represented for the nameplate's history, so the $49K price tag could make sense.
