GM’s Pause and Play Radio in the Spotlight

The pause and play radio introduced by GM in 2008 allows drivers (and passengers, of course) to record live transmissions and listen to them later.

GM’s pause and play radio is integrated in the high navigation radio in the Chevrolet Equinox, Buick LaCrosse, GMC Terrain and Cadillac SRX and, of course, on the Cadillac CTS Jukebox and Navigation radio, on which it made its world premiere in 2008. The feature is also on its way to the Buick Regal and the Chevrolet Cruze.

In a similar way that digital video recording in our houses allows us to capture live transmissions and take a break while viewing, the pause and play radio offers users the possibility to interrupt a live broadcast, record up to 20 minutes, and play it back later. The content goes to the radio’s hard disk. Users can then scroll through the content as they desire.

However, we don’t understand the reason why the feature now only allows you to record up to 20 minutes of broadcasting, as compared to the 60 minute time offered by it on the Cadillac CTS.

Regardless of that, this application might actually come in handy. You’ ll no longer have to miss your favorite show just because the Police has pulled you over. You can start the recording and, if the situation is more complex and requires more than 20 minutes of explaining you could even ask the officer to give you a minute to operate the device. This way you might start a conversation with him, explain the gadget’s possibilities and maybe even show him how it works. I guess you can see where this is going...
