GMC has announced an industry-first feature for the 2017 Acadia. We are writing about a “rear seat reminder,” a feature introduced for the 2017 model year on the GMC Acadia to prevent drivers from forgetting kids, pets, or even items in the backseat of their car.
Instead of using sensors to track what is on the back seat, which would be costly, GMC’s 2017 Acadia monitors the opening and closing of its rear doors in the 10 minutes before the car is started.

The system is also activated if the doors are opened and closed while the engine is running. The Limited trim level of the Acadia will not get this system.

Once stopped after a “door activation,” as GMC calls it, the vehicle will notify the driver to check the back seat. The notification is both audio and visual, and will come in the form of five audible chimes and a message on the gauge cluster. The message will read “Rear Seat Reminder/ Look in Rear Seat.”

General Motors believes this nifty trick will prevent owners from forgetting kids or pets in the backseat of their 2017 Acadia SUVs. Even if customers do not have children or pets, they might still overlook things like laptops, lunches, coats, and other items.

While forgetting things like those mentioned in the latter sentence is not a problem in itself, leaving your kids or pets in the back of your vehicle while it is parked can pose a grave risk to their lives. Heatstroke deaths are usually caused by people who forget their kids in the back of their cars, and this also happens to pets that are left inside while the driver goes shopping.

Furthermore, items left in the back of a car, especially pricey elements like laptops, are a target for theft. As we told you before, do not even leave an empty bag or container in a visible place inside your vehicle, as a desperate thief might break your window to attempt to steal it, no matter the value of the item.
