Oh, how the world is changing. The new Malibu, a traditional and resilient mid-size sedan nameplate, is being built in Asia right now, before a single customer has taken delivery of one on US soil. What’s more, the brand new Chevy Colorado mid-size pickup is being put together in Thailand.
However, that doesn’t mean the Colorado isn’t coming to its place of birth, as after only one month after bringing the truck to our attention, GM has made an announcement yesterday saying that it plans to mass produce it at the Wentzville Assembly plant in Missouri.
A massive $380 million investment will se the Missouri facility becoming one of the most modern. The automaker says that as a result of the new Colorado production line, some 1,260 jobs will be saved or created.
“Today’s announcement demonstrates that the members of UAW Local 2250 have all the qualities of a world-class work force,” said Joe Ashton, UAW vice president representing the GM Department. “We recognize and appreciate their focus on quality, flexibility and hard work. These new products will provide an opportunity for the plant to be more fully utilized and provide good-paying, middle-class jobs for Wentzville. ”
“The all-new Colorado builds on Chevrolet’s strong truck heritage,” said Cathy Clegg, GM vice president of Labor Relations. “As we celebrate the first 100 years of Chevrolet today, it is exciting to bring this new global product to the Wentzville team. They also have a strong heritage – a long-standing commitment to building quality products."
