Revealed with much pomp in September 2022, the 2024 model year Chevrolet Silverado HD pickup truck is under recall due to a rather disturbing issue. As it happens, certain components in the steering gear assembly were not properly heat treated by the supplier.
Michigan-based Nexteer is the supplier in question. If the steering gear shaft fractures, the driver won't be able to steer the vehicle. General Motors became aware of this problem on June 20, when a General Motors quality engineer discovered a fractured shaft during an alignment operation. The engineer reported it through the Speak Up For Safety program, which was created in 2014 as a result of the infamous ignition switch saga.

The following day, on June 21, the aforementioned supplier admitted to shipping steering gear assemblies with improperly heat treated components. How did those assemblies pass quality control, that's anyone's guess…

It gets worse, though. General Motors further determined that Nexteer used an out-of-specification material. On the upside, the biggest automaker of the Big Three in Detroit isn't aware of any field incident or warranty claim related to said issue. Containment efforts were initiated on June 23. The suspect assemblies are used in the GMC Sierra HD as well. Just under 3,900 pickup trucks are recalled in total, split between the 2500 and 3500 series.

As per the document attached below, suspect pickup trucks were assembled in the period between June 7 and June 24. The part numbers for the steering gear assemblies used in these vehicles are 86802095, 86802096, 86802097, 86802098, and 86554125. Dealers have already been instructed to inspect and – if necessary – replace the steering gear. Owners will have to wait until September 18 to receive GM-branded envelopes with information regarding NHTSA recall number 23V-549.

The Silverado and Sierra lead the full-size pickup truck segment in terms of sales, with the Chevy and GMC models outselling the F-Series by a tremendous margin. Deliveries for the Silverado and Sierra totaled 411,299 pickup trucks (including medium-duty workhorses) in the first half of 2023. By comparison, the Ford Motor Company moved 382,893 units of the F-Series (including 8,757 units of the Lightning).

The Silverado HD comes in five main specifications: Regular Cab Long Bed, Double Cab Standard Bed, Double Cab Long Bed, Crew Cab Standard Bed, and Crew Cab Long Bed. The most affordable Silverado HD of the bunch is $45,295 at press time. Prospective customers are presented with two V8 engines, with both of them featuring 10-speed automatic transmissions.

General Motors markets the tenner of the optional 6.6-liter Duramax turbo diesel V8 as being an Allision, but that's not exactly true. Allison only agreed to put its name on said transmission, which is manufactured by General Motors rather than Allison. If you want a true Allision in the Silverado, you'll have to buy a medium-duty truck (think 4500 HD, 5500 HD, and 6500 HD Chassis Cab).
