The South American automotive industry is on a rebound, following the problems it experienced, together with the rest of the world, in 2009. For the car makers who are conducting business in the countries there, the signs of recovery have translated in recent months in strong sales figures.
GM, one of the most important presence on the auto scene from countries like Brazil and Mexico, announced on Monday the appointment of two new leaders for its operations in the two markets. The appointments are meant to help GM increase the size of its business in Mexico and Brazil.
Starting June 1, the operations of the automaker in Brazil will be headed by Grace D. Lieblein (former head of the Mexican branch), who has been appointed president and managing director. Her place at GM Mexico will be taken by Ernesto Hernandez (currently vice president, vehicle sales, service and marketing at GM de Mexico), who will take over the same positions.
The moves were caused by the departure earlier this year of the former head of the Brazilian unit, Denise Johnson.
"Grace Lieblein has done an outstanding job leading GM in Mexico, managing through an incredibly difficult period during the global economic crisis and driving the operations back toward profitability. She has prepared a highly capable successor in Ernesto Hernandez, ensuring a smooth transition and the retention of key industry and consumer relationships in Mexico,” said Mark Reuss, president, North America.
“We are honored that Grace will lead GM’s operations in Brazil, one of the largest markets for General Motors. Her extraordinary leadership skills will allow us to further improve GM's position in the country,” added Jaime Ardila, president, South America.
