General Motors has announced it will be laying off more than 1,000 employees from its factory in Sao Jose dos Campos in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
The decision will affect 1,053 workers and comes following the discontinuation of the Chevrolet Classic in August 2013. The employees were given a paid leave of absence until December 31, in compliance with terms agreed upon between GM and workers union.

“There's not the slightest chance of reversing the situation,” GM director of international affairs Luiz Moan said after a meeting with Brazil's Finance Minister, Guido Mantega, Fox News reports.

The Chevrolet Classic built at the Sao Jose dos Campos plant was based on the Opel Corsa C. The vehicle was also manufactured in Argentina and Ecuador.
