There's some good news across the Chevrolet board from the corner office head honchos at General Motors. But that's not valid for sports cars like the Camaro.
Thanks to popular demand, GM's chief executive officer Mary Barra, has recently announced that Chevrolet's top-selling EV series, the Bolt EV and Bolt EUV, would indeed have a replacement. That's the good news, definitely. The bad omen is that GM intends to base the replacements on the Ultium architecture – and that one isn't off to a flying start until now. Of course, the CEO also gave no update on the timeline of the next-generation Bolt's arrival.
Additionally, the company just unveiled an all-new Chevy Traverse mid-size crossover SUV, and it seems the brand's split-headlight styling is finally coming into its own when the tough-looking Silverado truck series inspire it. On the other hand, Chevy Camaro fans – as few as there are left – are inconsolable because the 2024 model year is the end of the line for the current sixth generation.
There will be nothing after the range-wide Collector's Edition and the 56-uni Garage 56 ZL1 version, as Chevrolet has no planned successor. Sure, the company has promised this is not the end of the story for the nameplate, but who knows when they plan to resurrect it? Plus, now the GM Design Center's social media reel again adds insult to injury by portraying some feisty Chevrolet ideation sketches by Brian Malczewski.
Diehard aficionados know very well he is not just one of the company's many designers – instead, we are dealing with the Lead Exterior Designer at General Motors. Hot on the heels of the EV-focused vision of a low-slung sports car with traditional proportions that triggered a lot of Camaro hopes for onlookers, now the social media caretakers give us another of his "epic" ideas: "We dream big and explore every idea, even imagining fun new takes on beloved classics."
Consequently, regular folks' imagination was again inflamed with thoughts of a potential Camaro x El Camino crossover into sports-car-like coupe-utility (aka 'Ute') territory. Since it's seen directly from the profile POV, it's hard to make out if this is also electric or ICE-powered, but it's still fun to see that the creative juices flow freely at GM – at least when it comes to wishful-thinking cars.
I guess it would be pretty safe to assume that we are dealing with something that will never see the light of day in real life – even though it's a great combination of the classic style of the Chevy El Camino Ute combined with the modern feeling of the Chevy Camaro and then sprinkled with the impetuosity of a few futuristic strokes of the CGI brush. Oh, well, let's return to dreaming with our eyes wide open…
