GM: “Collapse Is Imminent If We Do Nothing”

General Motors continues the race for money with a new clip published on its newly-launched website, dubbed GM Facts and Fiction, asking US citizens to contact lawmakers and Congress members and urge them to approve the $25 billion loan program for US automakers. Basically, GM's video follows the same line as the one published by Chrysler last week, with a bunch of statistics concerning the US automotive industry and citizens and finally asking viewers to get in touch with their Congress members.

But more importantly, the American carmaker rolled out a separate website that promotes General Motors' cause and invite visitors to join the initiative by filling in some forms in order to be sent to certain legislators.

“The collapse of the U.S.-based auto industry wouldn't just impact the more than 239,000 Americans directly employed by the Big Three. One out of every 10 people in America is employed in a service that is related to the U.S. auto industry. If a plant closes, so does its suppliers, the local stores, the hot dog vendors, and the local restaurants,” GM said on the website.

According to figures provided by General Motors, approximately 3 million jobs would be lost in the first year after the automotive industry collapse, with another 2.5 million to follow next year. In addition, the personal income in United States would drop by more than $150.7 billion while domestic car production would likely fall to zero.

“The credit crisis that is affecting us all is wounding the U.S. auto industry in many different ways. Carmakers can’t get loans to restructure and to produce new advanced technology vehicles. Suppliers and dealers can’t get loans for routine business, and customers can’t get loans for new cars,” GM explained.
