This year’s Frankfurt Motor Show is an important moment for Opel, which has introduced the Astra K at the event, with GM CEO Mary Bara unveiling the Sport Tourer version alongside the hatchback.
We recently spent a few (static) hours with an Astra K and we liked what we saw. However, the number of orders that have already been placed still managed to take us by surprise, as 30,000 people have already expressed their interest for the new compact.
The Astra K is built on GM’s new D2 platform, which brings a massive 200 kg (441 lbs) diet. Nevertheless, the compact Opel doesn’t follow the usual size increase trend. In fact, measuring 4,370 mm in length, the new generation is 50 mm shorter compared to its predecessor, with the wheelbase also being 20 mm shorter. Don’t worry, though, the Astra never had legroom issue and the new one even ups the ante on this front by 35 mm
The Sports Tourer also manages to offer an extra 80 liters of luggage capacity, as the total volume (with the seats down) sits at 1,630 liters. The list of practicality assets continues with a power-operated rear hatch, which can also be opened with a foot movement.
The list of novelties also includes the infotainment area, where the Astra now offers Apple’s CarPlay, as well as the Android Auto interface.
The vehicle is set to hit the market after the Frankfurt Motor Show.

Time to discuss the engine range
There’s an entry-level 1.0-liter three-cylinder gasoline unit delivering 105 hp, as well as a new 1.4 ECOTEC that produces 145 hp and 250 Nm (185 lb-ft) of twist. The German event also saw Opel introducing a 200 hp 1.6-liter petrol. On the diesel front, we get a 1.6-liter engine that allows the driver to use 95 hp. This is Opel Whisperer Diesel, which promises a memorable level of refinement for Astra buyers. The vehicle is set to hit the market after the Frankfurt Motor Show.
