On a selling day adjusted basis, GM's total August sales were up 2 percent the former month. But if you calculate how many cars General Motors moved the old fashioned way, those 272,423 vehicles delivered in August 2014 translate to a 1 percent drop.
Led by an 18 percent increase in truck sales compared to a year ago, a 10 percent increase in GMC deliveries and a 30 percent increase in commercial sales, General Motors' results are not as bad as one might think at first glance. The commercial segment was driven by pickup truck and van sales, up by 23 and 19 percent, respectively.
“Chevrolet, GMC and Cadillac had an outstanding month with trucks. Cars and crossovers like the Buick Encore and GMC Acadia, and the Chevrolet Sonic, Cruze and Traverse, were also strong,” declared Kurt McNeil, U.S. VP of sales operations. “We see a strong fall selling season ahead for GM and the industry, which sets the stage for the launches of the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon. Car-buying fundamentals like employment and energy prices are in good shape, consumer confidence has reached a post-recession high and business investment is increasing.”
August sales highlights compared to the same month last year include the 38 percent increase of Chevrolet and GMC large SUV sales. Sonic deliveries were up 13 percent, translating to the nameplate's best August ever, while retail sales of the Cruze increased 23 percent and Camaro retail deliveries were up a modest 2 percent. As for the Chevy Express, the van enjoyed its best August sales since 2007 thanks to a 23 percent improvement, while the GMC Savana saw a 70 percent hike compared to August 2013.
Demand for the Cadillac Escalade was pretty high the former month, deliveries increasing 64 percent for the vehicle line's best August since 2007. Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra pickup sales were up 13 and 10 percent, respectively, which translates to the best August for General Motors light and heavy-duty trucks since 2008. Sales of the Buick Encore small crossover were up 13 percent and Regal deliveries were up 29 percent. In the medium crossover segment, sales of the Chevy Traverse were up 11 percent and GMC Acadia deliveries were up 5 percent.
