The whole of the automotive industry is only just recovering from a very bad period, having been severely hit by the now gone global financial crisis. That includes everybody: carmakers, suppliers, workshops, and, of course, dealerships.
The latter had seen sales drop by a very high margin, so they needed to take measures. The simplest of them all is to offer discounts, but when you hardly sell anything, lowering your profit is the last thing you want to do. So other, more innovative measures had to be employed.
Some dealerships have acknowledged the fact that the recession is over and moved on, but others apparently started to enjoy these below the line promotion techniques and have continued to use them. Either that or somebody at the Peter Vardy (Audi?) dealership near Glasgow, Scotland, really loves ducks.
The sales boost provided by a huge inflatable duck sitting on the lawn in front of the showroom is highly debatable, but then again, stranger things have happened. Not that many, but they have happened. And besides, it's not like it could hurt in any way. Everybody loves a duckling. It reminds them of when they were little and had their bath.
Until it starts rolling down the highway, that is, at which point it begins to resemble Godzilla more than anything else. The apocalyptic images have been snapped this Saturday morning when a rather mild storm managed to break the yellow creature free and send it on a rampage on a nearby road.
The question is: how do you catch a giant inflatable duck that's rolling down a highway? It's not like there are people specifically trained for situations such as this, so somebody has to improvise. And do it on a very big scale. A spike strip should do the job, but predicting where the duck is going to head next is trickier.
Boredpanda says that the runaway was eventually apprehended before it could cause significant damage. There's no word whether it was returned to its owner or if the Peter Vardy dealership will continue to have it on display. If it will, this might prove to be the best publicity stunt they could have hoped for.
