Traffic was delayed on Scotland’s A74 motorway that connects West Glasgow to the English border at Gretna the other day when a sheepdog “took the wheel” of his owner’s truck. Luckily nobody was injured during the event, but Scotland’s traffic management service sure had a great laugh as their announcement quickly went viral on Twitter.
Who said dogs can’t drive? Of course they can, especially those who always sit next to their owner when riding in a vehicle. Whether the four-legged sheep keeper was planning his test drive, or it was an honest mistake, this dog definitely managed to put traffic to a stop for a while there.

According to BBC, the incident was reported to motorists on Twitter by Traffic Scotland, as it took place at J13 at Abington, South Lanarkshire. Don the sheepdog apparently leaned on the controls of the utility truck his owner, farmer Tom Hamilton, would normally handle. The man was checking lambs in a field above the M74 near Abington, leaving the pickup truck alone with the dog for a while.

Next thing he knows, his Collie sheepdog involuntary turned into a driver, crashing the truck through the fence and heading down an embankment onto the northbound lane of the highway. Fortunately, the vehicle stopped after hitting the central barrier, smashing the windscreen without getting anybody injured, Don included.

Shortly afterward, Traffic Scotland came with an update: “M74 (N) at J13 - Route is clear from earlier incident and dog is fine. Has to be the weirdest thing we have ever reported! No delays in the area”. Naturally, the incident was a great delight for motorists who started joking on Twitter.

Don, next time hit the brakes!
