The British Government is looking to increase the speed limit for all its highways from the 70 mph (113 km/h) motorists have been used to for the last 47 years, to 80 mph (128 km/h).
While the idea isn’t final, before the actual enforcement of the new speed limit, there will probably be a trial run, similar to that of 1965, when the 70 mph speed limit was tested out for four months prior to its official introduction.

Now, according to The Scotsman, it looks like the speed will remain at 70 mph in Scotland, despite clear indicators that all highways south of the Scottish border will allow drivers to legally go 10 mph faster in the not too distant future.

According to the same source, this differentiation of speed limits will create confusion among drivers, according to Conservative transport spokesman Alex Johnstone, who stated that “It’s a long drive up roads like the M6 and asking Scots to slow down at the Border will only cause confusion and immense frustration.

He went on to say that “Large parts of motorway in Scotland are in remote areas and it’s vital we keep travel times to a minimum, so increasing speed limits would allow traffic to move more quickly [. . .] However, the SNP government has a very authoritarian attitude to controlling every aspect of our lives, so it is no surprise that they want to restrict speed limits.
