BMW might have made the names a bit too cryptic for not-fans to understand anymore, but there can be no doubt about it: the super-diesels are more than a match for any petrol engine. As part of the new M Performance line of vehicles, the German automaker has launched this, the X6 M50d, at the Geneva Motor Show.
The setup of the suspension, steering or brakes are about as close to a the X6 M as you’re ever going to get, but the engine makes all the difference. Under the bonnet is a brand new 3.0-liter tri-turbo diesel engine that puts out no less than 381 PS (375 HP) and peak torque of 740 Newton metres (546 lb-ft). In the X6 sports activity vehicle, the engine is enough for a 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.3 seconds, which is only 0.6 seconds slower than the X6 M.
The engine in the M50d is much more frugal, pushing the massive SAV along for only 7.7 litres/100 kilometers combined (36.7 mpg imp), equivalent to CO2 emissions of just 204 g/km.
The car is packed with tech from the X6 M, like the adjustable suspension, the same sized brakes, the M Servotronic system will adjust steering sharpness depending on the speed, and M double spoke 20-inch wheels.
