We’d kill to know how many SsangYongs were sold in Europe last year, but it must have been enough for them to decide the Korando deserves a bit of an upgrade in 2012. That’s by a revised version of the SUV has been unveiled today at the Geneva Motor Show, and while it won’t grab headlines, it’s at least work a quick look.
The exterior changes brought about by the 2012 SsangYong Korando include a new chromed mesh grille for the front of the car and 'contemporary looking hybrid wiper blades'. While we don’t know what exactly that means, whatever the Korean did, they say this thing is “ready to challenge the market leaders in its class.”
On the technological side, the existing ones have been made more environmentally friendly. The 2.0-liter 149 PS eco diesel engine brings CO2 emissions down to 147g/km (2WD, manual) and 157g/km (AWD, manual), and is expected to go on sale in Europe from mid-year. Meanwhile, the 2.0-liter petrol produces CO2 emissions of 175g/km (2WD, manual) and 192g/km (AWD, manual).
SsangYong says its engineers have improved quality and worked to reduce engined and wind noise to some extent.
“Korando’s excellent rigidity and quality have already been recognised during its victory in the ScanCovery Trial 2012. Driving 7,000kms from the Arctic Circle to The Netherlands in January, the winning Korando beat some 60 SUV competitors after driving through the most arduous weather with temperatures as low as -40°C,” the carmaker adds.
